For an act that started out as little more than lead vocalist Tom Gabel
and an acoustic guitar, Against Me! has blossomed into a polished
protest-rock band, pairing melodic, Butch Vig-produced hooks 'n'
hollering with almost comically specific lyrics (''Protest songs/in
response to military aggression'' is the chorus of ''White People for
Peace''). Hardline anti-establishment fans will no doubt find New Wave, the group's major-label debut unforgivable, but more tragic would be anyone using
outdated theoretical principles to deny themselves the pleasure of
pogoing along. B+
