Paging Friedrich Nietzsche. The German philosopher must have inspired this tale, in which God takes the form of a Dinka woman named Sora. Before you can say ''God is dead,'' Sora dies in Sudan, and the hopeless world unravels mercilessly. A priest commits suicide, as do college buddies who, after witnessing urban anarchy, agree to take turns killing one another. Though God Is Deadstumbles with tangents such as a bizarre cameo by Colin Powell, Ron Currie Jr.'s pondering of existential crises is oddly captivating. One word of warning: Don't crack open this downer at the beach. B+
