Once Cell in the Sea (2007)

Details Release Date: Jul 17, 2007; Lead Performance: A Fine Frenzy; Genre: Pop

On One Cell in the Sea, A Fine Frenzy frontwoman Alison Sudol conjures the sort of musical wonderland that one might expect from a 22-year-old with fiery red locks: a colorful world of bemusement and sentimentality. The melodies on this debut are breathless, more Rufus than Tori, imbued with piano swells. Such attention to the dramatic works wonders on stripped-down tunes like ''Almost Lover,'' which lets Sudol's delicate voice take center stage, but proves too thick on other songs (''Rangers''), which end up sounding like melodramatic themes to CW shows.
