How many listeners want to hear hyperactive tunes about alienation and pain from an eccentric hip-hop duo? Quite a few, actually — just ask Gnarls Barkley. Though Monster Maker is unlikely to yield a ''Crazy''-size hit, the CD does offer its own peculiar pleasures, with Walz's frantic rants making mincemeat out of producer Sharkey's busy electro-organic beats. The standout track? A reimagining of Eddy Grant's ''Electric Avenue,'' wherein the ominous mood gives way to one of inspired silliness. B+
