Grand Animals (2007)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Jul 24, 2007; Lead Performance: Robbers On High Street; Genre: Rock

NYC's Robbers on High Street actually thieve from a pretty literal High Street — High Street being the British equivalent of Main Street. Like Anglophiliac magpies, the shaggy trio expertly appropriates the bittersweet jangle, boppy harmonics, and even Cool Britannia cadences of Village Green Preservation Society-era Kinks and that group's contemporaries. Thanks in part to buoyant production from Italian composer-producer Daniele Luppi (Gnarls Barkley, John Legend), though, Grand Animals comes off less Robbery than sweet tribute. B+
