These lesser-known Buñuel works are neither as surreal nor scandalous as his Un Chien Andalou or Viridiana. Gran Casino is a Mexican melodrama notable only for surprisingly creative musical numbers. The meatier Young One examines race and sexual taboo in a tale of a black fugitive (Bernie Hamilton) hiding on an island inhabited by a horny game warden and a nubile teen girl. Buñuel treats the film's characters, good and bad, with a startling evenhandedness. EXTRAS Worthwhile commentaries from historians. Casino: B- Young: B+
