On her third solo album, Versatile Heart, Linda Thompson's clarion voice graces songs from a variety of genres, from the languid lounge rockabilly of ''Do Your Best for Rock 'n' Roll'' to the brokenhearted acoustic balladry of ''The Way I Love You.'' Folkophobes who fear that the Brit (the storied ex-wife of singer-songwriter Richard Thompson) might be a tad too trad are advised to check out the Rufus Wainwright-penned ''Beauty,'' which features a duet with Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons) and may well be the most compelling, if only, avant-chamber-pop treat of the year.
