A more literal group than Architecture in Helsinki would have named themselves Twee Electro-Pop in
Melbourne, but there's nothing straightforward about this Australian
sextet. Singer Cameron Bird suffers from a very specific type of audio
ADD: On his band's buzzing, busy third album (Places Like This), he leaps from synthy party
jams to steel-drum rocking tropicalia. It's a scattershot approach
that's often frustrating. But when one of his madcap schemes works (such
as in the sublimely sloppy calypso-infused ''Heart It Races''), the
results are exhilarating. B-
