The report that Owen Wilson, the 38-year-old comic actor known for his easygoing demeanor, had attempted suicide was shocking and sobering for both fans and the industry. And it left many people wondering how this sensitive situation will affect the in-demand actor's workload.

On Tuesday, a Santa Monica police log confirmed that a suicide attempt call had been made from Wilson's house on Sunday. At press time, his rep had no further comment; Wilson himself had only released a brief statement on Monday, saying that he was going through a ''difficult time'' and asking for privacy so he could ''receive care and heal.'' Medical officials also reported on Monday that Wilson was in good condition at L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The incident puts plans for the actor's upcoming films in flux. Wilson was soon set to shoot for a week on Tropic Thunder, the Ben Stiller- directed comedy currently filming in Hawaii, but according to a source close to the production, he will no longer be doing the film. (A DreamWorks rep had no comment.) Wilson is also signed on to costar with Jennifer Aniston in the Fox 2000 comedy Marley & Me, but a production schedule has not yet been set. As for his next film, The Darjeeling Limited, out Sept. 29, it's unknown whether Wilson plans to attend the Sept. 3 world premiere at the Venice film festival, though at press time organizers still had him scheduled to appear. Fox Searchlight did not return calls for comment, but when Wilson spoke with EW last month, he was optimistic about the dramedy. ''I always have a hard time watching stuff that I've worked on,'' he said. ''But this was easier to watch. I liked it.''
