With the instrumental big-band explosion that opens It's Not Big It's Large, you might
expect Lyle Lovett and His Large Band to fully capitalize on his whimsical blues-jazz bent. But
Not Big really is kind of small in a good way and geared toward his
stripped-down country-folk origins. ''All Downhill'' will add some mirth
to his concert sets; think Joe Walsh with a steel guitar. But the
standouts are acoustic ballads that suggest a lonesome depth of feeling
while, as usual, steering 100 Texas miles clear of outright sentiment. B+
