His eight CDs have proved he's an inventive recording artist, but troubadour Ben Harper lives to play on stage, where his music has always sounded warmest. For the follow-up to his ambitious 2006 double disc, Harper and his band entered a Paris studio directly from the road in an attempt to capture that heat. It worked: Lifeline thankfully favors songs over jamming, but there's a casual profundity to tunes like ''Fight Outta You'' and ''Say You Will'' that a more complicated process might've squelched. Just add applause. B+
