9-9:30 PM · CBS · Returns Sept. 24
Creator Chuck Lorre is psyched about a new story line for Jon Cryer's Alan: He starts dating Janeane Garofalo, who'll also show up later in the season on time-slot competitor 24. ''Her character is a deeply, deeply damaged woman,'' says Lorre gleefully. In this, the fifth season, he also wants to do some ''episodes where Charlie [Sheen] grows weary of the one-night stands with bimbos and goes on a date with a woman of his own age.'' (For the record, that's 40, and the part will be played by ER's Ming-Na.) ''She's formidable,'' says Lorre, ''a municipal-court judge with a small child. She's someone who really challenges him to step up. He becomes the arm candy in her life.'' This may be the first episode Denise Richards laughs at really hard.
