A few years ago, irony-prone hipsters briefly embraced this unorthodox crew three white, female emcees from Long Island before moving on to guiltier pleasures. But the joke's on all of us, because the then-awkward mic fiends of Northern State have crafted a legitimately thrilling third album (Can I Keep This Pen?). While the ladies stick with smart-aleck rhymes (topics include Asian cuisine and Boss Tweed), they also branch out with moody ballads and frisky new-wave anthems.
