One stormy night in Phoenix, the skies are troubled by too many aircraft, not enough computer power, and two cocky air traffic controllers duking it out on the ground. In Ground Control Sutherland and Leonard manage to convey the idea that ''failed separation'' — two planes heading for collision — is just about the scariest phrase imaginable. C+
