In the three years since Steve Earle's last studio disc, he's married country
songbird Allison Moorer and ditched Nashville for NYC. The fresh start
suits him: Washington Square Serenade is awash in unexpected grace notes. Brazilian
neo-folksters Forro in the Dark provide the harmonies ''All of us are
immigrants'' (take that, Lou Dobbs!) in ''City of Immigrants.'' Hip-hop
rhythms bubble up in ''Satellite Radio.'' And ''Way Down in the Hole'' the
theme song for The Wire simmers with foreboding. But mostly this is a
love letter to his new home.
