'CHOICE' MEMORIES Nicholas Sparks once again uses flashbacks to explore the nature of love in his latest novel

Fans of Nicholas Sparks' signature use of flashbacks to illustrate the highs (and lows) of true love should welcome The Choice. Travis, a free-spirited North Carolina veterinarian, faces a tough decision regarding his 10-year marriage to Gabby, an uptight physician's assistant who gave up a reliable (read: boring) lover to run off with Travis. His ''choice'' is surprising; Sparks leads us to think it's one thing when it's really another. But for the occasional treacly moment — during a date, Travis and Gabby realize ''they were sitting across from a person who just might change the course of their lives'' — this is a pleasantly sentimental journey.
