Until its too-tidy ending, this uncharacteristically serious drama from cult director Roger Corman is chillingly effective. In The Intruder, a trim, unmannered Shatner plays against his clean-cut handsomeness as an extremist stoking racism in a Southern town on the cusp of integration. Taut filmmaking and a supporting cast of nonprofessionals (who, Corman says, were given a ''watered-down'' script) make the virulence uncomfortably vivid. EXTRAS In a short doc, Corman reveals that The Intruder — his one nonexploitation flick — took 40 years to break even.
