Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream, Jennifer Ackerman's tantalizingly titled look at the minutiae of bodily functions, does its best to poeticize waking, seeing, and multitasking. But in the end, it's the science that makes or breaks, say, a six-page account of the hormonal surges behind hunger — and in that case, it can be a little dry. Because the book is structured chronologically through a typical day, things tend to drag until the night-time (don't judge me for finding sex and sleep more appealing than an afternoon snack or a workout). Morevover, her chapter on processing information suggests that it's perfectly fair to turn straight to the stuff that interests me most and skip the rest. B-
