As long as it's dissecting the six or seven passages in the Bible that ostensibly disparage homosexuality, this documentary ode to tolerance takes a shrewd, detailed, eye-opening look at how speciously selective and ahistorical the church condemnation of gays really is. (In Leviticus 11:11, the eating of shrimp is an ''abomination'' too.) That said, the film's argument against overly literal Bible readings may not preach to anyone but the converted, and when For the Bible Tells Me So strays from scripture, its ardent plea for sexual freedom within modern Christian life grows a bit too late-night PBS generic.
