A
A gas, a blast: Sibs Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger of The Fiery Furnaces come as close as
we'd want them to in making a ''conventional'' rock album, Widow City. Which means her
conversational phrasing gets into the grooves of his guitar riffs (is
that an Aerosmith homage in ''The Old Hag Is Sleeping''?), and catchy
refrains accompany the ornate keyboard fanfares. The lyrics hew closely
to contemporary poetry's oblique emotionalism heart mingled with wit. Is there a more consistently enjoyable art-rock act in America? Nope.
