The 1980 suicide of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, sealed their status as generationally morose punk prophets, and this biopic offers a portrait of his alienation that is shockingly humane. Sam Riley plays Curtis with that slightly androidal bug-eyed handsomeness.
