You may have noticed that bloggers are buzzing about the sorry state of female-driven movies. Some blame material; some say it's a fluke. So we studied a list of this year's five highest-grossing pics with female leads so far (sorry, Hairspray — drag doesn't count!). What we found is that Hollywood's heroines haven't exactly had cause to celebrate the Year of the Woman.
Resident Evil: Extinction — $48.1 Million
What does it say when the top-grossing female-led film of 2007 is little
more than a violent fanboy fantasy? Or that it ranks only 35th on the
year-to-date box office chart?
Premonition — $47.9 Million
Bullock's super- natural thriller raked in $17.6 million on its opening
weekend in March — a career high for the usually bankable actress. But her
films typically break at least $50 million.
Because I Said So — $42.7 Million
Keaton teamed up with Lauren Graham and Mandy Moore for this modestly
successful Super Bowl-weekend lark. Still, it was — dare we say
it? — beneath her copious talents.
No Reservations — $42.6 Million
Reservations wasn't a smash, but the culinary rom-com outgrossed
Intolerable Cruelty, Zeta-Jones' 2003 pairing with George Clooney that
was reportedly made for twice the price.
Freedom Writers — $36.6 Million
Swank's inspirational teacher drama struggled to find its niche in early
January amid holdover holiday blockbusters like Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness and Ben Stiller's Night at the Museum.
