STAMP OF APPROVAL Alison Pill and Bobby Cannavale in Theresa Rebeck's Mauritius
Joan Marcus

Credits

Opening Date: Sep 13, 2007; Lead Performances: F. Murray Abraham and Bobby Cannavale; Writer: Theresa Rebeck; Director: Doug Hughes; Genre: Thriller

Playwright Theresa Rebeck built her reputation on her range: 2003's post-9/11 rant Omnium Gatherum, 2006's oedipal Water's Edge, 2007's showbiz satire The Scene. For her long-overdue Broadway debut, she veers in yet another direction. A crackling thriller with a family drama simmering beneath the surface, Mauritius milks more tension from the subject of stamp collecting than any show ought to. Credit Rebeck, of course, but also her cast, particularly the sensational Bobby Cannavale, who gives his comical con man guts, gravitas, and a little bit of heart. A
