In Sidney Lumet's mesmerizing crime drama, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke give seismic performances as brothers who rob their parents' jewelry store — a heist that goes spectacularly wrong. Structured like a post-Tarantino mind-bender, it's more like a great film noir crossed with Long Day's Journey Into Night. Lumet, at 83, works with the vigor and cunning of a virtuoso half his age.
