THE SCENE
>Born — Born in the Bronx takes it back to 1977, when NYC shutterbug Joe
Conzo began snapping urgent, candid pictures of local shows, where a
revolutionary new sound could be heard.
Breaks — Janette Beckman, a professional photographer from Britain, crisscrossed
the United States between 1982 and 1990 to shoot the posed portraits
that appear in The Breaks.
THE SKILLS
Born — Glimpses of seminal party-starters such as the Cold Crush Brothers and
Afrika Bambaataa are complemented by vintage fliers promoting their gigs.
> Breaks — Images of rap's first generation of international icons range from a grinning Slick Rick to mean-mugging tough guys like Ice Cube and Eazy-E.
THE STYLES
Born — An awful lot of people rock some combination of tight jeans, dome-shaped
hats, and/or oversize glasses — a popular look that may as well have been
a uniform.
> Breaks — It's an explosion of expressive fashion. A youthful Busta Rhymes
strikes a pose in a sea green tracksuit! Public Enemy get militant in
black berets and shades!
