Rock 'N' Roll

There may be great dramas to be written about doomed Pink Floyd singer Syd Barrett, the role contemporary music played in subverting Czechoslovakia's communist regime, and a breast-cancer-stricken academic specializing in the work of Greek poet Sappho. Tackling all three at once — as Tom Stoppard's disjointed new opus Rock 'N' Roll does — yields merely a good one. Still, performances by Brian Cox, Rufus Sewell, and Sinéad Cusack — as a very different mother and daughter — are as terrific as the classic rock tunes by the Floyd and the Stones used to punctuate this triple-album of a theatrical experience.
