In this nebulous, ponderous romantic mystery, Nicolas Roeg (The Man Who Fell to Earth) directs wife Theresa Russell in the story of an adulteress whose gravely injured spouse just won't die. Though Cold Heaven embraces spiritualism to address such themes as conscience and reconciliation, the payoff — a mushy epiphany on the cliffs of Carmel, Calif. — seems out to lunch. D+
