Todd Haynes' unorthodox Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There received four 2008 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations and one honorary award on Tuesday morning (Nov. 27). The film got nods for best feature, director, supporting male (Marcus Carl Franklin), and supporting actress (Cate Blanchett), and also received the inaugural Robert Altman Award, given to one film's director, casting director, and its ensemble cast. Also receiving four nominations were Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Jason Reitman's Juno, and Tamara Jenkins' The Savages.
Film Independent's Spirit Awards are handed out to feature films (70 minutes or longer) made for $20 million or less that exhibit a uniqueness of vision; original, provocative subject matter; and a significant percentage of financing from independent sources. Last year's awards were swept by Little Miss Sunshine, which took home best feature, best director, best first screenplay, and best supporting male (Alan Arkin).
