GARY GYGAX
July 27, 1938-March 4, 2008
By Rainn Wilson

''Who is this Gygax of whom you speak, young dwarf?'' These are not my words, but the imagined words of my alter-ego avatar, the half-elf magic user, Quint Fleetshanks (14th level, Chaotic Neutral alignment), as he discusses his legendary über-creator, one Gary Gygax. I spent countless weekends in my early adolescence hunched over basement tables with twenty-sided dice, painted lead figurines, graph paper, Twizzlers and stacks of tomes of the greatest game ever made, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS. America's Dungeonmaster, Mr. Gygax, its co-creator, passed away this year and the world has lost a mighty warrior who fathered millions of other mighty warriors, pimply and pale, who hunched over their basement tables for countless hours feasting on Twizzlers and their imaginations.

Gygax, 69, died of an aneurysm in Lake Geneva, Wis.
