Aphrodite has a phone-sex job, Apollo is bored, and big daddy Zeus languishes in bed watching Doctor Who on the telly in Gods Behaving Badly. The powers of the once-glamorous Greek deities have dwindled so much in the modern world that they are reduced to sharing a grotty London house. Then, prissy Artemis decides to bring in a maid, a sweet-natured human named Alice, and inadvertently uncorks a madcap narrative that includes a visit to the underworld, flying thunderbolts, unrequited love, and the temporary extinguishing of the sun. Marie Phillips' writing is fizzy, her premise clever, and her first novel amusing if not immortal. B
