CANCELED
On Dec. 10 in L.A., the Television Critics Association called off its
annual January press tour, where programmers, including the five
broadcast networks, present their lineups to journalists. The move comes
as negotiations between studios and the Writers Guild have stalled. In a
letter to its members, TCA president Dave Walker said that
networks citing budget cutbacks and talent unavailability had not
committed to the event. In fact, NBC had pulled out in November.
ROBBED
On Dec. 8, police discovered a break-in at the L.A. home of Charlize
Theron (In the Valley of Elah), 32. The actress was out of town.
COURTS
On Dec. 5, Kiefer Sutherland, 40, reported to an L.A. county jail, where
he'll serve 48 days for a DUI conviction, his second in three years.
Once released, the 24 star must attend an 18-month alcohol-education
class, followed by a five-year probationary period.... Ray Liotta (GoodFellas), 53, pleaded no contest to reckless driving on Dec. 6 in
L.A. Liotta says he was suffering from a prescription-drug interaction
when he hit two unoccupied parked cars in February. He received three
years' probation and 12 hours of alcohol education.... On Dec. 7 in
L.A., Vivica A. Fox (Curb Your Enthusiasm), 43, pleaded no contest to DUI for a March arrest. She took a deal that includes alcohol education
and three years of probation.... An L.A. judge issued an arrest warrant
for Daniel Baldwin, 47, on Dec. 7. The actor, picked up in 2006 on
cocaine charges, was to appear in court to discuss his drug
rehabilitation. His lawyer blamed the incident on ''miscommunication.''...
On Dec. 7 in L.A., Pierce Brosnan, 54, was sued for unspecified damages
by a photographer who claims he was assaulted by the ex-Bond on Oct. 26
in Malibu, Calif. (No criminal charges were filed against Brosnan.) His
reps did not return calls for comment.

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007)
The avant-garde composer and electronic-music pioneer died on Dec. 5 in
Kürten, Germany. Among those influenced by his droning synthesizers and
random sounds: Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, Björk, and even the Beatles,
who featured his image on the cover of 1967's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
