The usual recipe from 10,000 Maniacs: Stern, self-serious lead singer Natalie Merchant mumbles her stern, oblique tales of societal decay and despair, as the Maniacs wrap her voice in windswept folk-pop that reduces the whole thing to background music for a low-fat, no-cholesterol dinner party. The apocalypse never sounded quite so boring in Our Time in Eden. C
