In The Gift, best-selling author Richard Paul Evans (The Christmas Box, The Locket) spins an engrossing tale about lonely store detective Nathan Hurst, who befriends Addison, a pretty, divorced mother with some serious baggage: Her 9-year-old son, Collin, moves closer to death when he exercises his extraordinary power to heal the sick. Every time Evans appears to take a predictable turn in the story (Nathan falls hard for Addison; her ex is an opportunistic cad), he sucker punches your emotions with some tender moments between Collin and his mom. Probably best to keep the Kleenex Ultra Softs handy with this one. A-
