JONATHAN GROFF
Spring Awakening

Melchior Gabor — the tortured hero of Broadway's Tony-winning Spring Awakening — is a bad boy. He mouths off in Latin class. He writes graphic sex-ed pamphlets for his pals. He beats up his true love, Wendla (Lea Michele), before deflowering her on a swing. Yet Groff makes his mop-topped Melchi more than a standard-issue sullen teen. He melts our hearts right along with Wendla's. He rocks songs like ''Totally F -- -ed.'' And he does it all in knee socks and short pants. (Well, this is 1891 Germany.) Plus, the 22-year-old recently rode a float in Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade flanked by five giant M&M's, proving that he can be sweet, too. — Melissa Rose Bernardo
