Critics tend to write off the Byrds' post-'68 work as a misbegotten dilution of their vision. That's bull. Roger McGuinn was attempting to lead his flock beyond jingle-jangle land, and if the flights weren't always smooth, they were occasionally breathtaking. Byrdmaniacs will appreciate (Untitled)/(Unissued)'s unreleased studio work and Live at the Filmore — February 1969, while casual fans can delight in discovering gems like ''Pale Blue'' and ''Tiffany Queen'' amid failed experiments Byrdmaniax and Farther Along.
