It's rare to see a college love affair depicted with the heightened erotic danger it has in Lou Ye's turbulent romantic drama. The gifted, and gorgeous, actors Hao Lei and Guo Xiaodong portray an entangled couple at Beijing University in the late 1980s, and the film's first half is saturated in the secret excitement of dorm-room trysts, of gossip and passion that spill over into betrayal. But the Tiananmen Square massacre puts the final nail in their affair — and as the two separate, the movie, sprawling forward year by year, turns episodic and unsatisfying. B-
