Not About Nightingales (1999)

Sleuthing in University of Texas archives led Vanessa Redgrave to this unproduced Tennessee Williams play, completed in 1938 when he was 27 years old. Based on a prison uprising that took place that year, it still horrifies with its depiction of cruelty as personified by the monstrous warden, brilliantly played by Corin Redgrave (sister Vanessa does not appear in the show). The play, directed by Trevor Nunn, reveals a young Williams who's a bit clumsy but showing signs of greatness. B+
