SPLITS
In a joint statement released on Jan. 16, Eddie Murphy, 46, and Tracey
Edmonds, 40, announced that they've parted ways only two weeks after
holding an unofficial wedding ceremony on a private island near Bora
Bora. The couple say they have ''decided to remain friends.''
RECOVERING
On Jan. 17, country star Faith Hill, 40, announced that she underwent
knee surgery to repair an old softball injury from high school. Though
now undergoing physical therapy, the singer will continue to record her
2008 Christmas album as planned.... On Jan. 18, a spokesperson for Lily Allen, 22, confirmed that the British singer suffered a miscarriage. Allen and her boyfriend, the Chemical Brothers' Ed Simons, 37, announced her pregnancy last month.
FREED
Kiefer Sutherland (24), 41, was released from a Glendale, Calif., prison on Jan. 21, after serving 48 days behind bars his full sentence for an October DUI conviction. The actor will remain on probation until 2012
and must attend an alcohol-education program.
COURTS
Three former DEA agents filed a $55 million defamation suit against NBC
Universal on Jan. 16 in NYC. They refute the claim in the epilogue to the company's film American Gangster that ''three-quarters of New York City's Drug Enforcement Agency'' were convicted on corruption charges between 1973 and 1985, following the events depicted in the movie. Gangster chronicles the clash between real-life heroin kingpin Frank
Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, and New Jersey detective Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe. A rep for NBC Universal did not return
calls for comment.
DEATHS
Musician John Stewart, 68, a member of the Kingston Trio and composer of
the Monkees' 1967 hit ''Daydream Believer,'' after suffering a stroke, Jan. 19, in San Diego.... Jazz bassist Earl May, 80, who played with greats like Charlie Parker, of a pulmonary embolism, Jan. 4, in South Orange, N.J.... Actress Lois Nettleton, 80, who starred in a 1973
Broadway revival of A Streetcar Named Desire and appeared on TV shows
like The Golden Girls, of complications from lung cancer, Jan. 18, in

Winehouse of Pain
Amy Winehouse's image took another hit on Jan. 22, when U.K. tabloid The Sun posted footage allegedly showing her smoking crack. A rep from The
Sun said the clip was filmed Jan. 18. ''We are deeply disappointed...by
these latest revelations and are doing everything we can to offer Amy
our full support,'' said her label in a statement. Her publicist also
told EW that the singer, nominated for six Grammys, plans to attend the
