Name Your Adventure (1992)

For a kids'-show concept, Name Your Adventure isn't bad: Teenagers are asked to offer politically correct fantasies, and their wishes are made real. One 15-year-old tap dancer, Dufftin Garcia, gets to meet Gregory Hines for a dance session, with the implied message that tap keeps the Hispanic teenager off the streets. ("If it wasn't for my dancing," he says, sitting on a New York City doorstep, "I'd probably be in trouble (like) my friends.") A 17-year-old girl, Bahar Soomekh, wants to go to a recycling center and teach the viewers about "the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle." All of this is intercut with scenes of the host, Mario Lopez (Saved by the Bell), learning to rope cattle in Montana. There's only one hitch: The show is dreadfully boring. If it were promoted as an educational program, it would be lauded for its creative approach, but by placing it on Saturday-morning TV with a title that teases us with the possibilities of something slightly more fun, like a visit to a space shuttle or a dinner with Johnny Depp, this reality-oriented show ends up feeling awfully phony.
