When Nick Framingham's childhood best friend, a brightly burning literary sensation, kills his girlfriend and then himself, inky secrets from the past are spilled along with the blood. Nick's idling marriage soon falls apart, he plows into an affair with his dead friend's screwup sister, and his idyllic childhood memories are slowly unveiled as lies. Now You See Him is a fast, haunting read with Days of Our Lives-style revelations coming every few pages toward the end. But someone really should've sat Eli Gottlieb down and had a chat about his embarrassing love scenes, which are full of metaphors about nozzles and sprockets. Ick. B
