2. EPISODE: ''Pilot: Part 2''
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: Sept. 29, 2004
PLOT SUMMARY: Puzzle pieces start to fall into place. After Walt finds a pair of handcuffs, we learn through a flashback to the flight that they belonged to Kate, and that she was on the plane in the custody of a U.S. Marshall — the unconscious man that Jack is currently taking care of. Meanwhile, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) accuses Sayid (Naveen Andrews) of being a terrorist who blew up the plane; the two eventually — along with Charlie, Kate, Boone, and Shannon (Maggie Grace) — go to bring the transceiver up the mountain to see if they can get a better signal, stopping along the way to shoot a...polar bear? Meanwhile, Locke (Terry O'Quinn) asks young Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) if he'd like to know a secret.
MYTHOLOGY ALERT: Part of the French radio transmission (blocking their transceiver's signal) that Shannon fails to translate references the Black Rock, a British slaving ship that will first be seen in ''Exodus, Part 1'' and where Sawyer will kill Locke's father.
CRITIQUE: A revealing and satisfying second hour (with minor points deducted for a not-very convincing-looking polar bear) that only scratches at the surface of what the Island — and the characters on it — have to offer.
GRADE: A– — Dalton Ross
