Even those of us who'll never be stoned enough to fully appreciate the
Mars Volta ethos can admire the band's precise and unswerving mania. The Bedlam in Goliath, their fourth album allegedly inspired by an encounter with a Ouija-type board is full of talk about wormholes and time folding in on space. You, in turn, will wish some of their frantic riffing and sci-fi philosophizing folded in on a more coherent tune. Still, you have to give props to a group that proficiently draws on Frank Zappa, Rush, and
the Banana Splits.
