23. EPISODE: ''Live Together, Die Alone''
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: May 24, 2006
PLOT SUMMARY: The sailboat belongs to ex-Hatchman Desmond. His backstory: He's a disgraced Scottish soldier who tried to prove himself worthy of a rich man’s daughter by winning a sailboat race; washed up on the Island and was rescued by ex-Hatchman Kelvin Inman, now deceased; attempted to leave the Island after encountering the castaways but all roads only led back to it. Weird. ''Operation: Walt Extraction'' commences even after Michael's treachery is exposed. Jack thinks he can beat the Others’ trap. Nope! Jack, Kate, and Sawyer are abducted; Michael and Walt are given a boat to go home. Meanwhile, Locke schemes to prove that pushing the Button is a meaningless endeavor. But it isn't. With the Hatch beginning to rumble and crumple, Desmond turns a failsafe key and the Hatch seems to explode amid a massive discharge of electromagnetic energy. The season's cliff-hanger: Scientists in a snowy locale detect the surge and call Desmond’s girlfriend, Penelope Widmore.
MYTHOLOGY ALERT: ''Kelvin Inman'' is also ''Joe Inman,'' the secret agent man who taught Sayid to torture. Desmond realizes that Oceanic 815 crashed on the one day he didn't push the Button on time; is there a connection? Also, his sailboat? He got it from Libby!
CRITIQUE: A mythological feast with multiple killer cliff-hangers; so much left unresolved.
