Let's Get Free (2000)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Release Date: Mar 14, 2000; Lead Performance: Dead Prez; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Shucking aside rap's materialism, the duo Dead Prez recall '80s-era PE on their edgy, political debut Let's Get Free. ''Hip-Hop'' asks, ''Would you rather have a Lexus or justice?'' while other tracks take on race, schools, and prisons. Revolutionary? Sure. Hip-hop for the underground and undergrads, backed by the latest high-tech beats. While sometimes polarized and preachy, it's a welcome break from rap that sounds like a remixed Home Shopping Network. B
