Field Manual (2008)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Release Date: Jan 29, 2008; Lead Performance: Chris Wallace; Genre: Indie Rock

Behold: Indiedom's most valuable sideman has broken temporarily free from the confines of Death Cab for Cutie to record a solo debut, Field Manual, that sounds, well, an awful lot like Death Cab's last couple of albums. Ever the skilled multi-instrumentalist, Walla also reveals an endearingly shaky singing voice, which he lends to a set of dreamy, low-key protest songs. The results aren't exactly groundbreaking — but they'll provide a thoroughly pleasant way for Death Cab fans to while away the months until the full band's next CD drops in May. B
