The Chairs

If absurdist theater is your thing — granted, that's a big If — you could do a lot worse than director Simon McBurney's update of Eugene Ionesco's 1952 play, The Chairs. Geraldine McEwan and Richard Briers are enchanting as Ionesco's Old Man and Old Woman, who bicker, flirt, ramble nonsensically, and fill the myriad title characters with imaginary guests as a way to distract themselves from mortality. Or: Think of Dharma and Greg in 70 years, having gone totally insane and fending off loneliness with sad, wacky valor. B+
