Sam Shepard's 1979 Pulitzer Prize-winning Hayseed Gothic play Buried Child about a young man who learns that you can't go home again — or if you do, you may find your kin psychotic and unable to recognize you — is set in a sinister farmhouse, where even its longtime residents feel dispossessed. As directed by Steppenwolf Theatre Company cofounder Gary Sinise and performed by a top-notch cast (including Twister's Lois Smith as the platitude-spouting, whiskey-swilling matriarch), this tragicomedy is played for laughs. And it is very funny in a darkly delirious way — like Beckett in the corn belt.(TM) B+
