A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Director Jerry Zaks revives but trips over Stephen Sondheim's incorrigibly politically incorrect farce of 1962. It was dumb to assume that busty concubines and dirty old men are still funny, even in a knowingly antiquated way. Nathan Lane (The Birdcage), as the narrator/Roman slave, jump-starts the tired gags with his put-upon mien, and Mark Linn-Baker (Perfect Strangers) does a funny turn in drag. But really, the biggest bust in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the show itself. (TC) C+
