The best and worst Oscar commercials -- We rate the ads you saw during the Academy Awards

When it comes to launching new TV commercials, only the Super Bowl's blitz trumps the Oscars. This year's crop of promotional shorts was rather lukewarm overall, but we still managed to pick the best and worst.

THE BEST
American Express
Shot by Oscar-nominated Capote director Bennett Miller, this vivid glimpse of designer Diane von Furstenberg's life plays like a ceremony-worthy clip.

M&M's
The still-not-melting mascots manage to bring sweet nostalgia into the future: Blue walks his dog, Brown gleefully Xeroxes his derriere. Life should be so sugarcoated.

THE WORST
JCPenney
We get it: Milestones (cue the bride) are precious. But why the mishmash of sights and sounds, from A&F-style skin-baring to an Alison Krauss-Robert Plant tune?

MasterCard
A young man's far-from-lazy eye had us expecting a ghost to pop up — and a pitch for the latest Japanese horror remake. Instead, we got a lame credit-card ad.
