PROFESSOR LAYTON AND THE CURIOUS VILLAGE
(Nintendo, DS, Everyone)

With its hand-drawn animation and Hardy Boys-esque title, it'd be easy to dismiss this unassuming puzzle adventure game as one for the juveniles. Don't make that mistake: while Layton's straightforward design and intuitive interface make it perfectly suitable for the younger set, its charming storyline and challenging set of brain teasers will keep even sophisticated gamers engaged. The set-up is simple: You follow the Sherlock Holmes-like Professor and his young assistant Luke as they seek a hidden treasure in the village of St. Mystere. Along the way they have to unravel the assorted mindbenders which make up the heart of the game. Layton's gameplay never flags, unlike many brain-game titles which too often have the appeal of a standardized test. A-Albert Kim
